What we look for

We're focused on autism spectrum disorder and uncontrolled epilepsy.

  • Autism spectrum disorder

Most autistic children have never had genetic testing, and fewer than one in five receive a genetically informed diagnosis.

  • Uncontrolled epilepsy

Many times, seizures in children are caused by a change in their genes. Finding that cause can make a big difference. It can show doctors which seizure medicines are likely to work and which ones to avoid. That's why knowing the cause is such an important step in finding the right treatment for your child.

Where the sequencing is done

Sunstone Clinical physicians order trio whole genome sequencing through Broad Clinical Labs, which operates under CLIA certification, the federal standard that governs laboratories performing diagnostic testing on human samples in the United States.

That distinction matters. A consumer ancestry kit is not a clinical test and cannot be used to diagnose or to direct treatment. A CLIA-certified result can be placed in your child's medical record and acted on by any physician who reads it.

Trio sequencing means your child and both parents are sequenced together, which is what allows a variant to be identified as newly arising in your child rather than inherited. It is the difference between finding a variant and understanding it.

Most families have a hard time accessing these types of tests.

Only a small number of specialists regularly order trio whole genome sequencing and interpret the results, and many families never get to see one.

A general neurologist will often order a small gene panel instead, which looks at only a small part of the picture. Many practices do not order genomic testing at all.

With Sunstone, we make the process easy. Our physicians order the test, it's sent to your home, and the results are reviewed with you.2
