This page explains what Sunstone is, what it is not, and which company is responsible for which part of your child's care.
One brand, two companies
Sunstone presents one experience to families. Two separate legal entities stand behind it, and the division between them is required by the corporate practice of medicine laws of most states.
Sunstone Clinical, PC
An independent, physician-owned medical practice. Its physicians hold the state licenses, evaluate the child, order sequencing and EEG, interpret results, deliver findings, and write the care plan. Every clinical decision belongs to the treating physician.
Sunstone Health, Inc.
A management services organization. It builds the technology, gathers and organizes records, operates the patient portal, and provides coordination and administrative services to the practice under a management services agreement. It does not practice medicine, does not employ the treating physicians in their clinical capacity, and does not direct clinical decision-making.
Sunstone Clinical, PC and other Sunstone-affiliated independent professional entities provide the clinical services made available through Sunstone Health.
What Sunstone is and is not
- Sunstone is not an insurance product, a health plan, or a prescription fulfillment service.
- Sunstone does not replace your child's relationship with their pediatrician or primary care provider. Sunstone Clinical is a specialty co-management practice, and your own physician stays involved throughout.
- Medical services are rendered by the physicians of Sunstone Clinical, PC and are subject to their professional judgment. Sunstone Health, Inc. does not participate in those decisions.
- Sunstone Clinical, PC operates subject to state regulation and may not be available in your state. Licensure is held by the practice's physicians and is listed under Where we practice.
- Sunstone does not guarantee that a genetic finding will be identified, that any particular test will be ordered, or that a prescription will be written. Genomic testing does not return a clear finding for every child.
- Sunstone Clinical physicians do not prescribe DEA controlled substances, non-therapeutic drugs, or other medications that carry a potential for abuse, and do not manage conditions that require in-person evaluation.
- Sunstone Clinical physicians reserve the right to decline care where a service is not clinically appropriate or is subject to potential misuse.
- Whole genome sequencing is performed by Broad Clinical Labs. At-home video EEG, folate metabolism testing, and gut microbiome testing are performed by independent accredited laboratories. Those services are ordered by a Sunstone Clinical physician when indicated and are provided by those laboratories under their own accreditations.
- Sunstone, Sunstone Health, Sunstone Clinical, and the Sunstone mark are trademarks of Sunstone Health, Inc. and may not be used without written permission.
Sunstone is not for medical emergencies.
If your child is in crisis, having a prolonged seizure, or in any life-threatening situation, call 911 or go to your nearest emergency department. Do not use the patient portal or an appointment request to report an emergency.
Privacy and notices
Sunstone Clinical, PC is a covered entity under HIPAA. Sunstone Health, Inc. handles protected health information as its business associate, under a business associate agreement, and only for the purposes of supporting the practice.
Sunstone Clinical may share information with your child's primary care provider and other treating clinicians in accordance with applicable state and federal law. Genetic information is handled under the additional protections those laws provide.
The Notice of Privacy Practices, Terms of Use, Privacy Policy, informed consent for telehealth, and nondiscrimination notice are provided separately and at the time of registration.

-
Referrals and availability
No referral or prior authorization is required to request an appointment. Sunstone Clinical, PC operates subject to state regulation and is not available in every state. Appointment timing depends on physician availability and licensure in the state where your child is located.
-
What testing is shown
Testing shown is illustrative of what an evaluation may include. Sunstone does not guarantee that any particular test will be ordered, that a genetic finding will be identified, or that a prescription will be written. All testing and treatment decisions are subject to the professional judgment of the treating physician. Sunstone Clinical physicians do not prescribe DEA controlled substances.
-
Co-management, not replacement
Sunstone is a specialty co-management practice and is not a replacement for your child's pediatrician or primary care provider. Sunstone is not an insurance product and is not a prescription fulfillment service.
-
Licensure
Sunstone Clinical, PC is licensed in 45 states and the District of Columbia as of 1 October 2026. It is not licensed in every state, and the states shown under Where we practice are the states where care is available. Licensure is held by the practice's physicians, not by Sunstone Health, Inc., and is subject to change. Telehealth licensure follows the state your child is physically located in at the time of the visit.
-
Reanalysis and trials
Reanalysis and notifications about new therapies or clinical trials describe eligibility to be considered, not a promise of treatment, enrollment, or a new result. Whether a trial or therapy is appropriate for your child is a decision for the treating physician, and enrollment decisions belong to the study sponsor.
-
Timing
Twelve weeks describes the Sunstone pathway from first appointment to a delivered care plan, and is not a guarantee of timing for any child. Actual timing depends on records retrieval, laboratory turnaround, and the clinical judgment of the treating physician. The six-year figure refers to published estimates of the diagnostic odyssey families experience outside a coordinated pathway — 6.3 years on average, EveryLife Foundation for Rare Diseases, 2023 — and is not a measurement of any individual practice.
Claims and sources
Published figures cited on this site are sourced where they appear. Statements about guideline-recommended testing refer to the recommendations of the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American College of Medical Genetics and Genomics, and describe eligibility for testing, not a promise of a particular result or treatment.
Situations described from a parent's point of view are composites of the circumstances families arrive with, and are not quotations from patients. Photographs of objects and clinical settings are illustrative.
State licensure is current as of 1 October 2026 — 45 states and the District of Columbia — and is subject to change. Physician availability shown on this site is illustrative. Nothing on this site is medical advice.
