What is Sunstone?

A plain-language overview, in six short answers.

Who Sunstone is

Sunstone is a precision genetics company for children. Its mission is to give every patient with a heritable disease a faster path to answers and deliver healthcare that works for them.

Sunstone is two organizations. Sunstone Clinical, PC is an independent, physician-owned medical practice. Its physicians evaluate the child, order testing, interpret results and write the care plan. Sunstone Health, Inc. is a management services organization that provides the technology, records, coordination and administrative services the practice uses. Sunstone Health, Inc. does not practice medicine and does not direct clinical decisions.

What it does

A Sunstone Clinical physician reviews the child's existing medical records, evaluates the child by video and writes a care plan. Testing is not part of that plan. Where the physician recommends it, and only then, testing such as trio whole genome sequencing or at-home video EEG is priced separately before the family agrees, with kits shipped to the family's address.2 The family receives a written care plan within 12 weeks, or the plan is free. If additional diagnostics are recommended, the 12 weeks run from when those results are received.6 An optional care team can continue working with the family and its clinicians after the plan is delivered.

Who it is for

Children with autism spectrum disorder or epilepsy, and their families. The child must be physically located in a state where Sunstone Clinical is licensed at the time of the visit, currently 45 states and the District of Columbia.4 No referral or prior authorization is needed.1 The full list is on Where we practice.

What it costs

The Precision Care Plan is $2,000, paid at enrollment. The optional concierge care team is $499 per month and is billed only after the care plan is delivered. Testing is not included in the $2,000. If the physician recommends it, each test is priced separately before the family agrees, and most families who need testing spend $100 to $4,500 depending on what is ordered. Sunstone is cash-pay and is not covered by health plans. HSA and FSA funds typically apply. Details are on Pricing.

What it does not do

Sunstone does not treat emergencies, provide therapy, or run sleep studies. It is not a replacement for a child's pediatrician, and it is not an insurance product.3 If a child is in crisis, call 911 or go to the nearest emergency department.

How to start

Enrollment currently runs through an early-access list. A family joins with a first name, an email address, their state and the child's age, and Sunstone follows up with next steps. No payment is taken when joining. The form is at Join the early-access list.
